I. About the Novel : Rip Van Winkle and The Legend of Sleepy Hollow










Rip van Winkle  is a short novel by the American writer Washington Irving, and the main character's name. In 1820, as a collection of short stories released "sketchbook" in the product.

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow is a short story of speculative fiction by American author Washington Irving, contained in his collection of 34 essays and short stories entitled The Sketch Book of Geoffrey Crayon, Gent. Written while Irving was living abroad in Birmingham, England, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" was first published in 1820. Along with Irving's companion piece "Rip Van Winkle", "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" is among the earliest examples of American fiction with enduring popularity, especially during the Halloween season.

III. About the Author : Washington Irving








Irving was born as the son of a merchant in Manhattan in New York City. Father is Scottish and his mother in England immigrants, was the youngest of 11 people. Named after George Washington, was named (when I was a child, George Washington has actually backfired). Candy in 1804, while playing in Europe, back to the year 1806, practice law, while familiar with the writer.



Irving's first book, "from the beginning of the world until the demise of the Netherlands dynasty New York history, Dietrich Knickerbocker by A History of New-York from the Beginning of the World to the End of the Dutch Dynasty, by Dietrich Knickerbocker" (announced December 1809) in. Humorously depicting the old new Amsterdam Netherlands citizens living it (or pride in local history with sly) appear in the dictionary word "Knickerbocker" by this piece, with English widely used as became a satirical statement.

Rip Van Winkle
That should say "United States Edition Shibaura Island taro". From the similarity of the basic sources that "have not been very much for hero, in the world before long time gone", known as "Western urashima". Say "urashima in the new world" ("new urashima) translated by MORI ogai: lit appears. Also, Kataoka Masayuki time magazine of the United States announced the English translation of "urashima taro" title "Urashima: A Japanese Rip van Winkle (urashima Japan RIP van Winkle)" and are titled.

Has also become a phrase in American English to mean "people", "always sleeping".

The Legend of Sleepy Hollow
The legend has been handed down in North America United States New York City hotels.

This legend became the story that Irving's work as well as RIP van Winkle, with especially at Halloween time, such as is known among the American people. However, in "the legend of Sleepy Hollow" headless Knight originally joined the British army in the American Revolutionary War Hessian (from the Grand Duchy of Hesse of Germany who mercenaries) that was enabled.

D. My General Opinion
I first heard this story.This story is easy to read even less of the vocabulary I, I could understand.
So, it is highly recommended. 

I felt the horror elements because I sleep and when woke up had been grandfather and the ghosts come out.

    Thanks for this analysis of the story. The parallels between the story Rip Van Winkle and Urashima Taro are very interesting. I wonder if the theme of sleeping away many years of one's life is a universal theme that occurs in stories of all cultures.
